Situation
(Company A) is one of the nation’s leading operators of general acute care hospitals. The organization’s affiliates own, operate or lease 134 hospitals in 29 states, with an aggregate of approximately 20,000 licensed beds. In over 55 percent of the markets served, Company A-affiliated hospitals are the sole provider of healthcare services. In April 2012, Company A relied on Johnston Technologies to implement a Data Infrastructure Management (DCIM) system for their off-site remote-location. DCIM is the centralization of monitoring, management and intelligent capacity planning for the critical systems of a data center.
DCIM Solution
The DCIM system required a single dashboard notification of all critical systems for Company A’s campus along with integration monitoring of the Building Automation System (BAS). Furthermore, the system needed to monitor:
A Cellwatch Battery Monitoring System (BMS), which monitors 12, 16 and 24 volt batteries via SNMP
An RLE Leak Detection System via RS485
A Fire Suppression System via dry contacts
Over 100 wire-free temperature sensors
(4) Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) via SNMP
(2) Generators via Modbus TCP
(5) Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) via Modbus TCP
(2) Switchgear plants via Modbus TCP
(14) Computer Room Handlers (CRAH) via SNMP
(22) In-row cooling units via SNMP
(2) Chiller plants via Backnet IP
(18) PM850 meters via RS485
A Hydrogen Monitoring System via Backnet IP
(2) Chilled water pumps via Backnet IP
Fuel Monitoring System for two (2) generators via 4-20mA
Result
This real-time, proactive monitoring system will enhance Company A’s facility reliability while helping preserve their investment in the remote-location. To meet their specific needs, Johnston Technologies utilized their partnership with Geist to implement a DCIM system that utilized the following specifications:
A custom site map dashboard for their Network Operations Console (NOC) display
Historical chart building and Report Manager
Customized individual equipment graphics
Key Performance Indicators
A live thermographic view of the data center temperature
Data center cost analysis (current and monthly for individual devices or itemized billing)
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) gauge
Heating/Cooling system loop diagram with motion
Three day weather service
Capacity planning capabilities
PDA alarm console views
Time/signature stamping for operator accountability
Email, SMS, network notification and NOC display with alarms
Equipment maintenance module for repair documentation
