Project: MS Department of IT Services
March 3, 2010 Written by Clayton
The Mississippi Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) provided statewide leadership and services that facilitate cost-effective information processing and telecommunication solutions for the state agencies and institutions.
ITS facilitates effective planning, deployment and operation of information technologies for the Mississippi State Government. ITS seeks to form dynamic partnerships with our customers and the private sector to optimize the use of available resources for enhanced delivery of government services.
On their website, the State of Mississippi states:
“The Mississippi Legislature in conjunction with the Department of Finance Administration, Bureau of Buildings approved and funded the construction of a new State Data Center for the Department of Information Technology Services (ITS). The new State Data Center went online May 2011.
The new State Data Center was designed to be highly available and secure. The Center is equipped with dual power feeds, uninterruptible power supplies, dual fuel generators, redundant cooling systems, on-premise fuel and water tanks, and 12,000 feet of raised floor area for hosting the state’s critical information systems. The facility is a major improvement over the old data center and has two connections to the state’s fiber optic network, providing 10 Gig dual path access to the State Data Center from any state fiber attached government building. Use of the State Data Center by state agencies and other government entities will improve the efficiency, security and resiliency of the government systems hosted within the facility. The taxpayers of the state have invested $18M to $20M in this facility, and its full utilization by state government is necessary to obtain the maximum benefit.
With the fiscal challenges the State faces, the best way to bring about efficiencies in IT for an enterprise the size of state government is to standardize on IT hardware and software to the extent practical, to leverage volume discounts on goods and services, and to share common IT resources (hardware, software, and environmentally controlled floor space) across agency boundaries.”
Johnston Technologies designed and sold (2) 300kVA UPSs at the department’s new headquarters, as well as a Cellwatch Battery Monitoring System. They also had the foresight to include a B.O.S.S. Cabinet (Battery on Site Spare) for a shorter mean time between repairs. [print_gllr id=4009]
