Security First

You hear the phrase, “Safety first.” quite often. But today we are going to say, “Security first.”  What is the first thing most people do when they walk out the front door? Unless they are coming right back in, most people lock it. And why do we lock the door? To be secure and to ensure nobody without a key (AKA the people who are supposed to have access to your home) will enter your abode and take your valuables or destroy your property.

Johnston Technologies uses this same concept when designing rack enclosures in your business’ data center. Did you know they have rack enclosures with doors that include a key-entry in both the front and back? It’s true. If you check out their website and you can read all about them.

In a nutshell, here’s what is great about having Johnston Technologies provide key-entry doors on your rack enclosures. Data centers contain highly critical (or mission critical) information and equipment that I’m pretty sure you don’t want every employee in your company having access to. A keyed entry ensures only authorized personnel access to your very expensive servers which contain your data.

Now I’ve mentioned in other blogs the importance of airflow in, out, and in between your racks. Overheating can cause costly damage, which is why temperature is one of the things a facility monitoring system watches. Johnston Technologies knows the importance of keeping IT equipment from overheating, which is why they offer a unique door solution.

Yes, the door includes a keyed entry to make you feel as safe and secure as a kid with a teddy bear or security blanket. BUT the doors can also manage the cold air flowing in and exiting out of the enclosure. How does it do this? The doors feature server fans that draw air into the rack and through the equipment. Then a liquid filled rear door coil cools the air before returning it back into the data center. Pretty ingenious, if I do say so myself.

Okay, back to feeling all safe and secure again. If dealing with keyed entry doors all the time isn’t your cup of tea, there is another option to ensure the security of your data center…have a security monitoring system. Security monitoring systems can be as simple as a dry contact, a device that will inform you if the rack has been opened or closed. Or they can be more complex, like having cameras installed which will monitor and record when the rack was opened, who opened it, what they worked on, and of course, all this material is time-stamped for added security.

Which ever route you choose to ensure the safety of your data center and IT equipment, be rest assured that Johnston Technologies’ professionals can easily integrate it into your current facility monitoring system. There’s only one thing worse than downtime, and that’s downtime caused by the hands of someone who should not have been in your data center in the first place. So give Johnston Technologies a ring today to discuss your business’ version of a teddy bear or security blanket. In the end, you will not only feel safe and secure, YOU WILL BE SAFE AND SECURE.
